Manchester City’s 2026/27 away jersey belongs as much to Manchester as it does to the club. PUMA builds the black-and-yellow design around the worker bee, one of the city’s most recognizable symbols and an emblem associated with hard work, unity, resilience and civic pride.
Why the worker bee matters in Manchester
The bee has deep roots in Manchester’s civic identity and is closely connected with the city’s industrial past. During the Industrial Revolution, Manchester was often imagined as a hive of activity: thousands of people contributing to a rapidly growing center of manufacturing and trade. Over time, the worker bee became shorthand for the city’s collective energy and its belief in people working together.
For the 2026/27 away jersey, that history is not hidden inside a collar label. A swarm of worker bees becomes part of the shirt itself, taking the city symbol onto the pitch wherever Manchester City travels.
Black and yellow turn the symbol into a full-kit identity
A predominantly black base gives the jersey a strong, industrial feel, while yellow details reference the worker bee directly. The contrast is bold enough for an away kit but remains easy to understand: the colors, symbols and campaign message all point back to Manchester.
PUMA and Manchester City also worked closely with Manchester City Council over use of the protected bee symbol, ensuring that its inclusion reflected the significance it carries for the city rather than treating it as a generic graphic.
“Built for This City”
The wider campaign is titled Built for This City, extending the worker-bee concept beyond the match jersey into prematch, travel, KING and culture collections. That approach makes the release feel less like one isolated away shirt and more like a complete piece of Manchester City identity.
The kit received its global reveal in Hong Kong during the club’s 2026 preseason tour, including a floating-vessel football pitch and community event. It then made its on-pitch debut against Inter Milan on August 1. Even with an international launch, however, the design remains rooted in one place: the worker bee ensures that Manchester travels with the team.
Authentic and replica construction
The authentic version uses PUMA’s ULTRAWEAVE performance fabric with dryCELL and ThermoAdapt technologies and contains at least 50% recycled material, excluding trims and decorations. The replica version uses RE:FIBRE construction with 95% recycled polyester sourced from textile waste.
For Manchester City supporters, the strongest part of the 2026/27 away jersey is not simply the black-and-yellow palette. It is that every major element has a local explanation. The bee, the colors and the campaign all point back to the city whose name the club carries.
